Dah kena KAD KUNING ?. Tak boleh post mesej ?. Ha... dah cakap jangan main kasar, nak jugak main kasar. Abramovich loses money list leadership to City owner

LONDON: Manchester City owner Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al-Nahyan has replaced his Chelsea counterpart Roman Abramovich as the wealthiest man in British Football, according to a "rich list" published on Wednesday.

The list, compiled by FourFourTwo magazine, estimates the Abu Dhabi Sheikh's personal fortune at 15 billion pounds, putting him ahead of second-ranked Indian tycoon Lakshmi Mittal (12.5 billion), who has a substantial interest in Championship side Queen's Park Rangers.

Abramovich is in third place with his wealth estimated to have fallen from ten billion pounds to seven billion as a result of the current economic crisis. David Beckham remains the richest player associated with British football, his personal fortune of 125 million comfortably surpassing his closest rivals Michael Owen (40 million) and Wayne Rooney (35 million).

Celtic shareholder Dermot Desmond, the Irish entrepreneur, is the richest person in Scottish football. He is eighth on the list and said to have assets worth 1.2 billion pounds, twice what Rangers chairman Sir David Murray is worth.

Tevez risks Fergie ire

LONDON: Carlos Tevez has risked jeopardising his chances of securing a long-term Manchester United contract by going public with his frustration over the lack of progress towards a permanent transfer.

Tevez has been on loan at Old Trafford for 18 months and United had been expected to take up an option to buy him from MSI, a group of South American investors to whom the Argentina striker is contracted. There has, however, been no progress towards a deal and Tevez has acknowledged for the first time that his future could lie elsewhere.

"If they don't sort out my future, there are other clubs ready to negotiate with my representative," the 24-year-old said.

"I'm told United will offer me a deal but I don't know," Tevez added in comments published on Tuesday. "I love it at United and the fans are special to me but I also understand football. If another club offered me the security of a five-year deal then I'd have to consider it."

According to the newspaper, Tevez contacted The Sun to counter speculation that his wage demands were blocking a deal.

"I haven't asked for what (Cristiano) Ronaldo gets or what (Wayne) Rooney gets," he said. "I have never said anything about what I should be paid because we have never had any talks."

Tevez's version of events directly contradicts that of Sir Alex Ferguson, who recently suggested that contract negotiations were underway but had hit an impasse.

As such, Tevez's comments are unlikely to be well-received by the United manager, who has a long track record of quickly jettisoning players who are seen to challenge his authority.

The United boss will also have been unimpressed by comments attributed to Tevez in which the striker appeared to encourage a bid from Real Madrid, whose officials have enraged Ferguson with their attempts to lure Ronaldo to the Spanish capital.

"Who wouldn't want to play for Real Madrid," Tevez was widely quoted as having told a Spanish magazine.

Under the terms of the two-year loan deal that saw Tevez move to United following a successful first season in England with West Ham, United can sign the striker permanently for a payment of 22 million pounds on top of the ten million pounds they have already paid MSI.

The size of the transfer fee may now present a stumbling block in what is a much less certain economic environment than when Tevez arrived at Old Trafford.

United's thinking will inevitably also be influenced by the fact that Tevez has been relegated to the role of back-up striker this season following the close season acquisition of Dimitar Berbatov.

Benitez to resist transfer temptation

LIVERPOOL: Rafael Benitez has suggested he will resist the temptation to add to his squad this month by emphasising his belief that his current squad can deliver a first league title in 19 years.

The Spanish manager has been linked with a move to bring former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey back to Anfield but there has been no movement on that front since the transfer window opened at the start of January.

With Fernando Torres, Martin Skrtel, Fabio Aurelio and Alvaro Arbeloa all back from injury, Benitez believes Liverpool are in good shape for the battle with Manchester United and Chelsea over the second half of the season.

"We finished 2008 very well, we played with style and have scored a lot of goals," Benitez said. "I am very pleased and happy with the situation and hope it will be the same in the new year.

"We have other players apart from Torres coming back from injury.

There is Skrtel, Aurelio and Arbeloa all fit now. It will be like signing three new players.

"We do not need to go into the transfer market, we are certainly not desperate to do so.

"If we find we need something we will try, but it is always hard in this window and very expensive.

"But we are in a good position and I am happy to use the players we have now plus the ones returning from injury."

The only departure from Anfield is likely to be out-of-favour winger Jermaine Pennant, who is reportedly a target for AC Milan.

Benitez will however be without defender Emiliano Insua until February 8 after the Argentinian, who has recently broken into the first team, was called up by his country for the South American Under-20 Championships. - AFP

Rafa makes rampaging start

DOHA: Rafael Nadal needed little more than three-quarters of an hour to score his first victory on the 2009 ATP World Tour, his crushing success appearing like an omen of yet further triumphs to come.

The Wimbledon, French Open and Olympic champion won 6-0, 6-1 against Fabrice Santoro in the first round of the Qatar Open, overwhelming the oldest man on the tour with his heavy hitting and relentless energy.

Santoro, a 36-year-old former Davis Cup hero who is playing his last, and a reduced, season, made his first appearance on Wimbledon's centre court only six months ago, and was now playing his first match against the mighty Nadal.

He may have wished he wasn't.

It was not till the ninth game that the clever Frenchman won one, and all his slices, variations of pace and tactical subtleties created little distraction for the muscular Spaniard. Fully 51 of the 66 points in the match were won by Nadal.

"It was really impressive being on the other side of the net against Nadal," said Santoro generously.

"Now I understand why Roger Federer missed volleys playing against him, something I previously couldn't understand," he added, referring to the deceptive weight of shot which Nadal creates, rather than the speed of hitting.

Nadal was pleased to win so quickly. "I hope to do that," he said, unconcerned at the brevity of the match practice.

"With my topspin, his ball is not the worst one for me. When he plays slice, that's a good ball for me."

Nadal felt pleased to have played such a close match in the exhibition final against Andy Murray in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, even though he lost it, believing that his preparation for the Australian Open in 12 days time is now further advanced.

But he was not prepared to suggest how far close he is, at this early stage, to his best. "You are never sure how far away you are," he said. "It's very important to practise every day with one hundred percent concentration."

Nadal became most animated when discussing his difficulties of 2008, when after winning three major titles, he was too tired to do himself full justice in the US Open and then was unable to play either the Davis Cup final or the ATP Tour year-end championships in Shanghai.

"What can I do?" he said. "Most of the tournaments I play I have to play," he said, referring to the ATP World Tour regulations.

"I play here to prepare for the Australian Open and I play Barcelona (a home tournament). But I can't change my schedule."

Meanwhile, Federer also progressed quickly. The winner of 13 Grand Slam titles started the new tour with an imperious 6-2, 6-2 success over Potito Starace, the world number 71, and now plays a second successive Italian, Andreas Seppi, who is almost 40 places higher.

Federer, who had been at risk of losing his world number two ranking, is now certain to hold on to it at least until the end of the Australian Open on February 1.

That is because Novak Djokovic, the world number three from Serbia, who is a mere ten ranking points behind him, started the 2009 season with a shock loss.

Djokovic gave up the chance of big appearance money in the Middle East to go straight to the antipodes to prepare for the defence of his Australian Open title. But he suffered a startling 6-4, 6-4 loss in Brisbane to Ernests Gulbis, the talented world number 53 from Latvia.

Federer should have a second semi-final in eight days against Andy Murray, the dangerously improving world number four from Scotland.

Murray, the titleholder, beat Albert Montanes, a top 50 Spaniard by 6-2, 6-4 with remarkable lack of nerves for the opening match of the season.

"Because of the matches last week it kind of settled me down a little bit, and I kind of felt I was hitting the ball well," said Murray, referring to his victories over Nadal and Federer in the exhibition in Abu Dhabi.

Tottenham on course for League Cup defence

LONDON: Tottenham moved within touching distance of defending their League Cup title after super-substitute Jamie O'Hara inspired a 4-1 win over Burnley in Tuesday's semi-final first leg.

When Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp sent on O'Hara at half-time, Tottenham were trailing to Martin Paterson's early goal and had been completely outplayed by Owen Coyle's Championship team.

But O'Hara's arrival sparked a remarkable transformation at White Hart Lane. The England Under-21 midfielder's free-kick set up the equaliser for Michael Dawson and he scored Tottenham's second himself before Roman Pavlyuchenko made it three for the Premier League club.

O'Hara wasn't finished there and he layed on the fourth goal with another free-kick that Michael Duff headed into his own net.

It was a whirlwind spell that left Burnley bewildered and Spurs on the verge of returning to Wembley on March 1 to defend the trophy they won last year by beating Chelsea.

All Tottenham have to do now is finish the job at Turf Moor in the second leg in two weeks and they will be able to look forward to a final showdown against Manchester United or Derby.

Jermain Defoe received a warm reception when he was paraded to the Tottenham fans before kick-off ahead of his imminent transfer from Portsmouth, but the empty seats around White Hart Lane suggested the home faithful weren't so thrilled by the prospect of more cup success.

Burnley had already claimed three Premier League scalps in the competition this season and those wins over Chelsea, Arsenal and Fulham made it clear they would be no pushover.

Just two minutes had passed when Clarets winger Chris Eagles burst clear down the right and fired just wide.

Eagles had served notice of his threat and the former Manchester United trainee punished Spurs for failing to heed the warning in the 14th minute.

He surged into the penalty area past Gareth Bale and, as Tottenham's defence stood statuesque, cut a cross back for Paterson to tap into the empty net.

Burnley's 6,000 travelling fans went wild and Spurs almost went into meltdown. Eagles was tormenting Bale and whipped in another teasing cross that Robbie Blake glanced agonisingly past the far post.

Tottenham briefly sparked into life after 25 minutes, only to be thwarted by Burnley keeper Brian Jensen. The giant Dane looked beaten when Pavlyuchenko flicked Jonathan Woodgate's header goalwards but somehow pushed the close-range effort away for a corner.

Yet Burnley won every 50-50 challenge in the first half and Aaron Lennon showed his frustration by thumping the ball into an advertising hoarding after another misplaced pass.

Redknapp responded by sending on O'Hara for David Bentley at half-time and it proved an inspired move.

In the 47th minute, O'Hara swung over a corner and Dawson rose above Clarke Carlisle to looped his ahead into the roof of the net.

Suddenly Tottenham were inspired and they went in front as O'Hara turned from provider to scorer six minutes later. Pavlyuchenko's cross was glanced on by Luka Modric to O'Hara and his low shot crept in under Jensen.

O'Hara wasn't just a thorn in Burnley's side going forward. His presence in front of Bale subdued Eagles for the first time and shutout the visitors' most creative force.

Bale's alert clearance denied Chris McCann midway through the half and moments later Pavyluchenko put Spurs in complete control.

The Russia forward collected Bale's 65th minute pass, skipped past Clarke and beat Jensen with a fine low strike.

The floodgates were well and truly open now and Spurs added a fourth two minutes later when O'Hara's free-kick was headed into his own net by Duff. - AFP

FAM insist there’s no favouritism in selection of coaches

PETALING JAYA: The FA of Malaysia (FAM) have made it clear that no favouritism is practised in the selection and assessment process of coaches for the A-licence.

The FAM general secretary, Datuk Azzuddin Ahmad, denied that they had been any kind of abuse in their coaching system and said that there was no truth in the allegations made against them in The Star on Tuesday that they had passed those who failed to meet the grade requirement for the licence. “The FAM have been transparent and have gone by the book, according to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) guidelines,” he said.

Azzuddin added that the selection process and the assessments made on the coaches would have to go through the mill — right from respective State FAs, the FAM coaching department and to the technical committee before they were endorsed.

“It is not a one-man decision. Often the bad guys are the instructors, who are there to help these coaches make the grade.

“There are bound to be some who won’t make the grade.

“A decision has to be made strictly on their performances in a one-month assessment period, which include theory and practical sessions,” he said.

“Both sessions are important and it will be unfair not to pass a candidate who has good football knowledge of the game compared to those with stronger credentials like former internationals.” The coaches are selected by their State FAs before the FAM shortlist candidates for the A-coaching licence.

“Those coaches involved in the domestic competitions get priority and we can give an assurance that selection and assessment are done purely on merit alone,” said Azzuddin.

The head of the coaching department in the FAM is R. Gopal.

The FAM have not received any appeals or complaints from any quarters on the results of their last grading exercise, which saw 10 out of the 21 coaches obtaining the A-coaching licence.

But it is learnt that a complaint has been lodged with the AFC.

Association football

Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of eleven players, and is widely considered to be the most popular sport in the world. It is a football variant played on a rectangular grass or artificial turf field, with a goal at each of the short ends. The object of the game is to score by manoeuvring the ball into the opposing goal. In general play, the goalkeepers are the only players allowed to use their hands or arms to propel the ball; the rest of the team usually use their feet to kick the ball into position, occasionally using their torso or head to intercept a ball in midair. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is tied at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time and/or a penalty shootout, depending on the format of the competition.

Laws of the game

There are seventeen laws in the official Laws of the Game. The same Laws are designed to apply to all levels of football, although certain modifications for groups such as juniors, seniors or women are permitted. The laws are often framed in broad terms, which allow flexibility in their application depending on the nature of the game. In addition to the seventeen laws, numerous IFAB decisions and other directives contribute to the regulation of football. The Laws of the Game are published by FIFA, but are maintained by the International Football Association Board, not FIFA itself.
