TOKYO: Second-placed Kawasaki Frontale closed the gap on leaders and defending champions Kashima Antlers to seven points but had to settle for a draw with Shimizu S-Pulse on Sunday in the J-League.
Defender Hiroki Ito (pictured) came to Kawasaki's rescue, nodding home the equaliser in injury time after Shimizu took the lead through Keisuke Iwashita in the 77th minute.
Two-time champions Kashima, surprisingly beaten by Omiya Ardija 3-1 on Saturday, are top on 50 points, followed by Kawasaki on 43 points and Sanfrecce Hiroshima and Shimizu, both on 40 points.
Kawasaki clash with Nagoya Grampus in the AFC Champions League quarter-finals next month.
Also Sunday, forward Hisato Sato fired the winner in the 80th minute to give Hiroshima a 2-1 win over Montedio Yamagata to stay in the hunt.
In the other game on Sunday, Kyoto Purple Sanga failed to cash in after Kashiwa Reysol were reduced to 10 men at the beginning of the second half as they drew 0-0.
