China can learn from VA: official

NANJING: A leading China Football Association (CFA) official has hailed Vision China’s efforts in Nanjing, saying Chinese football as a whole can learn from AFC’s Vision Asia programme.

Feng Jianming, Deputy General Secretary of the CFA, made these comments after an AFC/CFA Project Nanjing Review meeting to discuss the progress made in the city during 2008.

“If every CFA Football Designated City developed football as Nanjing and the other four Vision China cities have done, then China’s football landscape will be significantly different,” said Feng.

“CFA have been and will continue to be fully supportive in implementing Vision Asia in China.”

The CFA has 17 Football Designated Cities in China while AFC’s Vision China initiative reaches out to five cities – Nanjing, Qingdao, Wuhan, Chengdu and Zibo.

The meeting drew attention to the achievements of the Nanjing Football Association, which received financial help from the City Sports Bureau and was able to boost its manpower from 5 to 10 staff.

One of highlights was the Nanjing City League Division One, which featured nine clubs, each playing in their own stadium in a double round-robin format with 245 registered players.

Nanjing Technology University won the title ahead of Jin Tai FC.

In addition, the NFA organised a popular school league encompassing 11 of 13 districts, boosting the number of registered players in the city by more than 1,200.
