DEC 10 - It was supposed to be the night when Robbie Keane hammered out his big statement of intent.

But instead, another Anfield star in the spotlight for the wrong reasons beat him to it.

Irishman Keane's start to life on Merseyside has been so torrid that boss Rafa Benitez even had to deny suggestions that he is already considering offloading him.

Little wonder that the £20million (RM112 million) summer signing from Spurs was so desperate to prove his point as he was back in the line-up after being axed for Saturday's win at Blackburn.

But Ryan Babel - another of the Kop class with fidgety feet - stole his thunder and proved a point of his own.

Babel has grown so sick of kicking his heels on the bench that his agent has tried to arrange a loan move back to Ajax.

Liverpool swiftly knocked that on the head, despite his lack of chances since last year's £11m arrival from Holland.

Last night, back in his homeland, Babel showed flashes of exactly why. That included a leveller after Danko Lazovic gave PSV the lead.

Babel's header may not have drastically altered his side's Euro fortunes - but it could do wonders for his confidence.

His moment came two minutes into first-half stoppage time as he rose to head Lucas' free-kick past Andreas Isaksson for Liverpool's 300th European Cup goal.

It was hardly the prettiest he will ever score.

But no one at Liverpool will give two hoots about that if it does prove the catalyst in finally bringing Babel's obvious ability to the fore on a regular basis.

How Keane wished he could say the same after another night making clever runs but with only one clear sight of goal - a tame shot which rolled wide.

At least he could claim one assist, with the punt up field for Liverpool's third. But that was hardly the best he was hoping for from the evening.

Perhaps he should have guessed it was going to be one of those games. After all, PSV's Philips Stadion is not exactly his happiest hunting ground, he crashed out of last season's UEFA Cup here with Spurs.

Fortunately, Liverpool's ticket to the knockout stage was booked, this was just a case of whether they could edge out Atletico Madrid for Group D top spot.

Not that you would have wagered too much on them pipping the Spaniards when they fell behind on 36 minutes.
The goal made a mockery of Liverpool's reputation as one of Europe's toughest defensive nuts to crack.

Balazs Dszudzsak's corner was bizarrely headed down by Javier Mascherano and after it struck Dirk Marcellis, Lazovic slid under Diego Cavalieri.

Benitez was left shaking his head in disbelief.

The Liverpool chief rested leading lights Steven Gerrard, Pepe Reina and Xabi Alonso.

Lucas kept his side of the bargain with a good display and the free-kick for Babel's opener.

The Dutchman flashed another couple of efforts wide as he went for a spectacular second.

But he had to play second fiddle to Albert Riera when it came to stunning strikes as the Reds stole ahead on 69 minutes.

Riera himself has had to deal with murmurs of discontent of late, after a dip in form. But he silenced the doubters last night.

He picked up the ball more than 25 yards out and unleashed a rocket into
the corner.

PSV's lack of endeavour was hardly a glowing reference for the delights of the UEFA Cup, with a slot still there for the taking given the rightnresult.

But Marseille's draw with Atletico meant the Reds topped the group and the French went into Europe's second competition.

There was just one scare for Liverpool when Marcellis hit the outside of the post.

But 12 minutes from the end Liverpool clinched all three points with Ngog's first goal for the club.

Keane's flick upfield saw the rookie Frenchman outpace Jeremie Brechet before drilling home.

Benitez could even afford the luxury of pitching in youngsters Martin Kelly, Jay Spearing and Stephen Darby as they ran down the clock. Their European nights will certainly get harder than this. - The Sun

- The Sun

- The Sun

catalyst in finally bringing Babel's obvious ability to the fore on a
regular basis.

How Keane wished he could say the same after another night making clever
runs but with only one clear sight of goal - a tame shot which rolled wide.

At least he could claim one assist, with the punt up field for Liverpool's
third. But that was hardly the best he was hoping for from the evening.

Perhaps he should have guessed it was going to be one of those games. After
all, PSV's Philips Stadion is not exactly his happiest hunting ground, he
crashed out of last season's UEFA Cup here with Spurs.

Fortunately, Liverpool's ticket to the knockout stage was booked, this was
just a case of whether they could edge out Atletico Madrid for Group D top
spot.

Not that you would have wagered too much on them pipping the Spaniards when
they fell behind on 36 minutes.
The goal made a mockery of Liverpool's reputation as one of Europe's
toughest defensive nuts to crack.

Balazs Dszudzsak's corner was bizarrely headed down by Javier Mascherano and
after it struck Dirk Marcellis, Lazovic slid under Diego Cavalieri.

Benitez was left shaking his head in disbelief.

The Liverpool chief rested leading lights Steven Gerrard, Pepe Reina and
Xabi Alonso.

Lucas kept his side of the bargain with a good display and the free-kick for
Babel's opener.

The Dutchman flashed another couple of efforts wide as he went for a
spectacular second.

But he had to play second fiddle to Albert Riera when it came to stunning
strikes as the Reds stole ahead on 69 minutes.

Riera himself has had to deal with murmurs of discontent of late, after a
dip in form. But he silenced the doubters last night.

He picked up the ball more than 25 yards out and unleashed a rocket into
the corner.

PSV's lack of endeavour was hardly a glowing reference for the delights of
the UEFA Cup, with a slot still there for the taking given the rightnresult.

But Marseille's draw with Atletico meant the Reds topped the group and the
French went into Europe's second competition.

There was just one scare for Liverpool when Marcellis hit the outside of the
post.

But 12 minutes from the end Liverpool clinched all three points with Ngog's
first goal for the club.

Keane's flick upfield saw the rookie Frenchman outpace Jeremie Brechet
before drilling home.

Benitez could even afford the luxury of pitching in youngsters Martin Kelly,
Jay Spearing and Stephen Darby as they ran down the clock. Their European
nights will certainly get harder than this. - The Sun

PSV 1 Liverpool 3

DEC 10 - It was supposed to be the night when Robbie Keane hammered out his
big statement of intent.

But instead, another Anfield star in the spotlight for the wrong reasons
beat him to it.

Irishman Keane's start to life on Merseyside has been so torrid that boss
Rafa Benitez even had to deny suggestions that he is already considering
offloading him.

Little wonder that the £20million (RM112 million) summer signing from Spurs
was so desperate to prove his point as he was back in the line-up after
being axed for Saturday's win at Blackburn.

But Ryan Babel - another of the Kop class with fidgety feet - stole his
thunder and proved a point of his own.

Babel has grown so sick of kicking his heels on the bench that his agent has
tried to arrange a loan move back to Ajax.

Liverpool swiftly knocked that on the head, despite his lack of chances
since last year's £11m arrival from Holland.

Last night, back in his homeland, Babel showed flashes of exactly why. That
included a leveller after Danko Lazovic gave PSV the lead.

Babel's header may not have drastically altered his side's Euro fortunes -
but it could do wonders for his confidence.

His moment came two minutes into first-half stoppage time as he rose to head
Lucas' free-kick past Andreas Isaksson for Liverpool's 300th European Cup
goal.

It was hardly the prettiest he will ever score.

But no one at Liverpool will give two hoots about that if it does prove the
catalyst in finally bringing Babel's obvious ability to the fore on a
regular basis.

- The Sun

PSV 1 Liverpool 3

- The Sun

Berita terbaru dari RTM tadi
Kerry cakap sathia akan disingkir jika kalah ngan thailand
hehehehe

--------------------------------------

PHUKET, Dec 9 (Bernama) -- Despite a semifinal berth and his job at
stake, everything seems to be an uphill task for national coach B.
Sathianathan and his charges when facing in-form Thailand at their own
backyard.

A draw would certainly rule out a place in the semifinal and even a win
against the host might not be enough since Vietnam may sneak in with a
big win against minnows Laos in a match that would be held after the
Malaysia-Thailand tie.

Thailand are already assured of a place in the semis after beating Laos
6-0 and Vietnam 2-0.

"This is a do-or-die mission, and based purely on luck. If we win, we
will have to wait for the outcome of another match. Vietnam need to beat
Laos by more than three goals and they have the advantage of knowing our
result first," said Sathianathan.

Malaysia play Thailand at 5pm and the Laos-Vietnam match is on at 7.30pm
at the same stadium because Phuket does not have enough stadiums to host
both matches simultaneously and Malaysia had refused to play the tie in
Bangkok.

Vietnam who lost to Thailand 0-2 beat Malaysia 3-2 to collect three
points while Malaysia beat Laos 3-0 and lost to Vietnam and also have
three points.

Sathianathan who has been given the ultimatum to make the final or face
the prospect of being booted out by the FA of Malaysia (FAM) despite
guiding the team to the 2008 Merdeka Tournament final, said the match
against the Thais would not be easy as the homesters would go all out to
win.

"They are the best in the region. They rested all their best players
against Laos while we had to play with our key players in all three
matches...it's not easy for players to recuperate, but I am glad we are
staying in Phuket for the third game," he said.

There has been rumours that FAM are looking to hire former Indonesian
coach Peter White to replace Sathianathan after his one-year contract
expired.

Thai chief coach Peter Reid said the team would strive for their third
straight win although a semifinal spot in already in the bag.

"I have brought the best players for tomorrow's match as a draw is not
good enough for me. But I have also told my players that Malaysia will
not be an easy side to beat as they have strong players, good techniques
and are desperate to win," said the former England international.

Reid said Malaysia played well against Vietnam but were unfortunate to
lose.

"This is a do-or-die mission, and based purely on luck. If we win, we will have to wait for the outcome of another match. Vietnam need to beat Laos by more than three goals and they have the advantage of knowing our result first," said Sathianathan.

Malaysia play Thailand at 5pm and the Laos-Vietnam match is on at 7.30pm at the same stadium because Phuket does not have enough stadiums to host both matches simultaneously and Malaysia had refused to play the tie in Bangkok.

Vietnam who lost to Thailand 0-2 beat Malaysia 3-2 to collect three points while Malaysia beat Laos 3-0 and lost to Vietnam and also have three points.

Sathianathan who has been given the ultimatum to make the final or face the prospect of being booted out by the FA of Malaysia (FAM) despite guiding the team to the 2008 Merdeka Tournament final, said the match against the Thais would not be easy as the homesters would go all out to win.
