Laws of the game There are seventeen laws in the official Laws of the
Game. The same Laws are designed to apply to all levels of football,
although certain modifications for groups such as juniors, seniors or
women are permitted. The laws are often framed in broad terms, which
allow flexibility in their application depending on the nature of the
game. In addition to the seventeen laws, numerous IFAB decisions and
other directives contribute to the regulation of football. The Laws of
the Game are published by FIFA, but are maintained by the International
Football Association Board, not FIFA itself.

Association football Association football, more commonly known as
football or soccer, is a team sport played between two teams of eleven
players, and is widely considered to be the most popular sport in the
world. It is a football variant played on a rectangular grass or
artificial turf field, with a goal at each of the short ends. The object
of the game is to score by manoeuvring the ball into the opposing goal.
In general play, the goalkeepers are the only players allowed to use
their hands or arms to propel the ball; the rest of the team usually use
their feet to kick the ball into position, occasionally using their
torso or head to intercept a ball in midair. The team that scores the
most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is tied at the end
of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time
and/or a penalty shootout, depending on the format of the competition.

The modern game was codified in England following the formation of The
Football Association, whose 1863 Laws of the Game created the
foundations for the way the sport is played today. Football is governed
internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Football
Association (International Federation of Association Football), commonly
known by the acronym FIFA. The most prestigious international football
competition is the FIFA World Cup, held every four years. This event,
the most widely viewed in the world, boasts an audience twice that of
the Summer Olympic Games.

PARIS: Cristiano Ronaldo memenangi Anugerah Bola Emas sebagai Pemain
Terbaik Tahunan Eropah, semalam, bagi menjadi pemain Manchester United
keempat meraih penghormatan itu dan yang pertama sejak George Best
memenanginya pada 1968.

Sentuhan jaringan hebat Ronaldo membantunya mengatasi penyerang
Barcelona, Lionel Messi yang menduduki tempat kedua, ketika penyerang
Liverpool, Fernando Torres di tempat ketiga daripada keputusan undian
yang diumumkan oleh majalah France Football.

"Ia adalah antara hari terhebat dalam hidup saya. Memenangi anugerah
ini...saya impikannya sejak kecil lagi. Mereka yang mengenali saya,
hidup dengan saya, tahu bahawa ini adalah mimpi yang jadi kenyataan buat
saya," katanya.

Ronaldo mendominasi pengundian itu, meraih 446 undi. Messi mendapat 281
undi dan Torres, 179 undi. Ia memberikan Ronaldo dua mata lebih daripada
jumlah diraih Kaka ketika memenangi anugerah itu, tahun lalu.

"Saya hanya 23 tahun dan ia menakjubkan. Sukar dipercayai. Ia lebih baik
jika mengambil kira nama besar dalam saingan tahun ini. Lionel Messi di
tempat kedua dan Torres di tempat ketiga, tetapi juga Xavi (Hernandez,
di tempat kelima)."

Ronaldo memuji rakan sepasukan yang membantunya, dan berkata dia
berharap untuk memenangi anugerah itu sekali lagi.

"Merekalah yang mengumpan bola kepada saya untuk menjaringkan gol. Apa
yang pasti ialah saya mahu memenanginya sekali lagi, ia rasa amat bagus.
Jadi (pagi esok), pada jam lapan pagi, saya akan bangun dan memberitahu
diri sendiri bahawa saya mahu jadi lebih baik," katanya.

Tahun lalu, Ronaldo menduduki tempat kedua dengan 277 undi, ketika Messi
di tempat ketiga dengan 255 undi. Pemenang tahun lalu, Kaka, merosot ke
tangga kelapan tahun ini dengan hanya 31 undi.

Ronaldo menjaringkan 42 gol dalam semua kejohanan musim lalu ketika
United memenangi Liga Perdana Inggeris dan Liga Juara-Juara Eropah.

Dia menambah anugerah itu kepada trofi Pemain Terbaik Dunia FIFPro yang
dimenangi Oktober lalu, serta anugerah daripada Persatuan Pemain-pemain
Profesional serta Penulis-penulis Bola Sepak England. - AP
