Shin eyes Seongnam title hat-trick

SEONGNAM-Seongnam Ilhwa legend and new coach Shin Tae-yong has targeted a hat-trick of titles, hoping that his success with the club as a player can boost team spirit.

Shin played for Seongnam from 1992 to 2004, playing 401 matches and scoring 99 goals. He also had 68 assists.

He was the club’s MVP in 1995 and 2001 and was part of the team who won the title three times in a row from 1993-95.

Though wary of the challenge, Shin, who has replaced Kim Hak-beom as coach, is confident he can bring back the glory days to Seongnam.

“I am a little afraid because Kim resigned even though Seongnam’s record was not bad,” said Shin, who had a stint as assistant coach with Australian side Queensland.

“I'd like to repeat Seongnam's record of winning three straight championships.''

Kim resigned after Seongnam were eliminated from the K-League playoffs in the second round. They finished third in the regular season behind Suwon Bluewings and FC Seoul.
