Malaysia, Thailand buat perhitungan

FADHIL (kiri) meledak gol pembukaan seawal minit ketujuh.

Wright-Phillips sertai City

- Agensi

Saha ubah haluan tinggalkan Old Trafford

- AFP

Mourinho sedia gegar Eropah

- AFP

Cabaran getir menanti United

IMBAS KEMBALI...

- AFP

Ronaldo terbaik di Eropah

TERBAIK...

MONTE CARLO, Monaco -- Defending champion Manchester United was drawn
Thursday into a group with Scotland's Glasgow Celtic, Spain's Villarreal
and Denmark's Aalborg in the first round of the European Champions
League.

"We always love to draw the champion of Europe as we did last year,"
said Celtic forward Scott McDonald, whose team faced Barcelona in the
opening round of last season's tournament. "All of those things add up
to good things and get us to the next round again. They're going to be
fantastic games."

United's trip to Villarreal in Group E will revive memories of Wayne
Rooney's ejection in September 2005, a tournament in which Alex
Ferguson's team failed to progress to the second round.

Chelsea, which lost May's final on penalty kicks to the Red Devils, also
has a relatively easy group, featuring AS Roma, Bordeaux and Romania's
CFR Cluj.

Five-time champion Liverpool, which needed a 118th-minute goal Wednesday
to qualify, was drawn into a group with PSV Eindhoven, Atletico Madrid
and Olympique Marseille. That means Liverpool's star striker Fernando
Torres, who scored the winner for Spain against Germany in June's
European Championship final, gets a chance to face his former team.

"With Fernando and the other Spanish players, there will be huge, huge
interest in that one," Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry said. "It's
great. That's what makes the Champions League so exciting. It's
fantastic."

Juventus has a tough return to the lucrative competition after a
two-year absence. The Italians will have to overcome nine-time champion
Real Madrid, UEFA Cup winner Zenit St. Petersburg and debutante BATE of
Belarus.

Two-time champion Barcelona will meet Sporting Lisbon, Basel and
Ukraine's Shakhtar Donetsk, while Arsenal faces Dynamo Kiev, Turkey's
Fenerbahce and Porto.

Inter Milan is with Werder Bremen, Panathinaikos and Cyprus' Anorthosis
Famagusta, and Bayern Munich was drawn to face Fiorentina, Lyon and
Steaua Bucharest.

Liverpool just makes it into Champions League

LIVERPOOL, Aug 28 — Dirk Kuyt scored in the 28th minute of extra time, and Liverpool squeaked into the European Champions League with a 1-0 victory over Belgium’s Standard Liege last night.

Liverpool, a five-time champion, was in danger of losing tens of millions of dollars in television income before Kuyt scored following a cross from Ryan Babel. The teams tied 0-0 two weeks ago in the first leg of the third-round qualifier and if the game had ended scoreless, the series would have been decided by penalty kicks.

Liverpool captain Steve Gerrard, who played the entire match, will have groin surgery and be sidelined for at least 10 days. He will miss England’s opening World Cup qualifiers at Andorra and Croatia but should be back for the Liverpool’s Champions League opener on Sept 16 or 17.

“It’s not serious, but we need to do it,” Liverpool coach Rafa Benitez said. “He has been playing some games in pain, not being 100 per cent fit.”

Greek champion Olympiakos was denied a spot in the 32-club group stage when it defeated Cyprus’ Anorthosis Famugusta 1-0 but lost 3-1 on aggregate.

Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Fiorentina and Olympique Marseille also advanced to the group stage along with Denmark’s Aalborg, Belarus’ BATE, Basel, Dinamo Kiev, Turkey’s Fenerbahce, Ukraine’s Shakhtar Donetsk and Steaua Bucharest.

They join teams that automatically earned first-round berths, a group that includes Manchester United, Chelsea, Inter Milan, AS Roma, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Lyon.

Arsenal advanced on 6-0 aggregate, defeating the Netherlands’ Twente 4-0 on goals by Samir Nasri, William Gallas, Theo Walcott and Nicklas Bendtner.

At Anfield, Liverpool once again was saved by goalkeeper Pepe Reina, who dove in the seventh minute to repel Dieumerci Mbokani effort from 20 yards. Liverpool thought a penalty kick should have been awarded when Nabil El Zhar was fouled by American defender Oguchi Onyewu with seven minutes remaining in extra time.

Fulham, Blackburn, West Ham and Sunderland advanced to the third round of the English League Cup.

Fulham was the only club not to fall behind, although the Cottagers came within seven minutes of being eliminated by Leicester before winning 3-2.

Blackburn rallied to oust Grimsby 4-1, West Ham needed overtime to beat Macclesfield 4-1 and Sunderland defeated Nottingham Forest 2-1 in extra time. — AP

Gerrard back in the Anfield groove

Liverpool 2 Middlesbrough 1

LONDON, Aug 24 — Steven Gerrard's miserable week ended on an incredible high when he struck Liverpool's winner with virtually the last kick of the game in front of the Kop. Gerrard, such a forlorn figure when sent out on the left for England in midweek, waited until the 94th minute to make his decisive intervention in front of Fabio Capello's No2, Franco Baldini.

His thunderbolt finish from 18 yards capped a remarkable turnaround for Rafa Benitez's men, who trailed until an unlikely equaliser from Jamie Carragher's deflected shot just four minutes from the end.

At that stage, nobody would have put a bean on them being contenders for their first title since 1990. But you cannot underestimate the Gerrard factor and last night the fans left Anfield celebrating six points out of six, and believing anything is possible.

Two seasons ago, Benitez would have looked at Gerrard's ordinary performance in the first hour and hooked him off, particularly as the midfielder is suffering with a groin problem. But the Spaniard knows you can never write off the Kop hero, who appears to write his own scripts.

"You always have a chance with Gerrard on the pitch because of his quality," said Benitez. 'Even when he's not 100 per cent, he can change games. He did it again for us.

"We have won two games against Sunderland and Middlesbrough with late goals. Last season we might have only drawn or lost these games. It's given everyone here confidence."

The flipside was the face of Boro boss Gareth Southgate, who looked almost bereaved as his team got precisely nothing for an outstanding display.

"I'm heartbroken for the lads. They didn't deserve the blow they got at the end," he said.

"They are incredibly down in the dressing room but, as a manager, I've got to take encouragement from the way we played against one of the top teams in the league."

Boro lost their first-choice goalkeeper Brad Jones to a dislocated finger in the warm-up, and stand-in Ross Turnbull had to make a fantastic save to deny Dirk Kuyt in the opening minute. Liverpool failed to capitalise, though, with Xabi Alonso playing like someone with an uncertain future and Gerrard clearly pacing himself because of injury.

Robbie Keane, their £20million new boy, spent a lot of the afternoon complaining to referee Mike Riley about the physical marking of David Wheater, Emanuel Pogatetz and Robert Huth. And when he did show the quick feet he was signed for, Torres found his goalbound shot deflected wide off Pogatetz's heels.

Boro grew in confidence once the second half started and the arrival of substitute Mido proved significant in the short-term. He showed Carragher a clean pair of heels with his first dribble and then stunned Anfield by shooting past Pepe Reina from 20 yards, with Liverpool's defenders backing off.

A furious Benitez shouted at his own players, trudged around the technical area in disgust and sent on Ryan Babel, Fabio Aurelio and Nabil El Zhar to try to perform a rescue act. In the end, though, it was a couple of more well-known faces that saved the day.

First to step up was Carragher, with just three goals in his previous 347 league games. Liverpool appealed for a handball that never came and the defender took advantage of split second hesitation in the Boro ranks to storm forward and hit-and-hope from 22yards.

The ball struck the head of Pogatetz, and deflected in, leaving Carragher to celebrate crazily. The dubious goal panel will now have to judge if Carragher's initial shot was on target, but you would not volunteer to be the one to tell him it was an own goal.

Until then, Gerrard had cut a sorry figure. But, as the fourth official signalled three minutes of overtime, this giant of a player burst into life. First, he delivered a curling free-kick that Turnbull just got his fingertips. Then, with seconds left and Boro scrapping for their lives, Keane found his skipper 18 yards out.

There was a sense of inevitability about what happened next. Gerrard took a quick glance to the top righthand corner and drilled a shot in precisely the place he wanted. Benitez can look forward to Wednesday's crucial Champions League qualifier against Standard Liege with more confidence, particularly as Javier Mascherano is due back from the Olympics with a gold medal round his neck. Who knows, chief executive Rick Parry - seated yesterday with departing FA chief Brian Barwick - may give the go-ahead for a left-sided player, whether it is Gareth Barry, Albert Riera or anyone else.

But whoever comes in, Liverpool's destiny will lie at Gerrard's feet. In 2005, his hammer against West Ham kept them in the FA Cup final right at the death. He may feel that yesterday's goal might prove just as important. — The Daily Mail

Deco puts Chelsea back on top

LONDON, Aug 25 — Chelsea stayed atop the Premier League standings after Deco scored with a free kick yesterday to give the London club a 1-0 victory at Wigan.

Chelsea has six points after two games and leads Liverpool on goal difference.

Deco’s curling free kick caught Wigan’s stand-in goalkeeper Mike Pollitt out of position in the fourth minute and drifted into the top corner.

Chelsea successfully took the sting out of the second half and Wigan’s last chance came in injury time when Olivier Kapo’s free kick hit the Chelsea wall.

In yesterday’s other game, Manchester City beat 10-man West Ham 3-0 behind two goals from Elano to give new manager Mark Hughes a win in his first home game.

Daniel Sturridge also scored for City, which took advantage of West Ham’s Mark Noble being sent off in the first half after getting two yellow cards.

Defending champion Manchester United, which only managed a draw against Newcastle in last weekend’s opening round, was to play Portsmouth today.

In PARIS, Nice edged Auxerre 1-0 with a goal from Alaeddine Yahia, while Rennes rallied late to beat Lille 2-1 in the French league.

Bruno Cheyrou and substitute Moussa Sow scored in stoppage time to give Rennes its first win this season.

Yohan Cabaye gave Lille the lead in the 34th, but Cheyrou equalised in the first minute of injury time, before Sow scored in the 93rd.

In Auxerre, Yahia headed Nice in front in the 29th minute. Auxerre had a chance to equalize in the 45th with a penalty, but Kevin Lejeune missed.

Marseille and Lyon share the lead with seven points after three rounds.

In FRANKFURT, Wolfsburg rallied from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw at Bochum and Frankfurt also came from behind to draw 1-1 at Cologne in the Bundesliga.

Stanislav Sestak put Bochum ahead in the 12th minute and the home side doubled the lead with a header from Christoph Dabrowski shortly after halftime.

But Ricardo Costa pulled one back two minutes later and Mahir Saglik salvaged the draw for Felix Magath’s team.

In Cologne, Milivoje Novakovic outran Eintracht’s defence and slotted home a goal in the 33rd.

Roda Antar then hit the post from the penalty spot and Eintracht struck back in the 81st, when captain Ioannis Amanatidis’ cross was turned in by Martin Fenin. — AP

Fletcher scores again in Man United’s 1-0 win over Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, Aug 26 — Darren Fletcher scored for the second straight game, and Manchester United defeated Portsmouth 1-0 last night for its first English Premier League victory of the season.

Fletcher scored in the 33rd minute for the two-time defending league champions, who opened with a 1-1 tie against Newcastle.

Chelsea and Liverpool both are 2-0 with six points, and United has four, matched by Blackburn, Hull and Newcastle. Arsenal, which lost 1-0 at Fulham on Saturday, has three.

Portsmouth is 0-2 in the league this season after winning the FA Cup in May. — AP

Club fortunes to ride on transfer deadline

AUG 28 — You can’t win the league in August, as the saying goes, though not as widely known is the fact that a team can lose the league at this stage of the season.

The next few days, I believe, can make or break a club’s hopes of conquest in the English Premier League.

Tottenham Hotspurs, for instance, will now have to face reality. They just cannot afford to keep Dimitar Berbatov.

Economics will tell you that letting the Bulgarian rot in the reserves, as threatened, is a big no-no. Not only will Spurs be forking out a huge wage bill every week but they will also see the player’s value drop dramatically.

It would be best to just accept the ?25 million (RM155 million) that Manchester United are reportedly ready to offer. Though it is less than what Spurs are willing to accept, it is still the best opportunity cost.

This will help Spurs to speed up their hunt for a hitman upfront too. Latest reports have it that Roman Paylenchenko is poised to move to White Hart Lane.

Should the signing take place, then at least Spurs will add much-needed bite to their attack which has been disastrous of late, resulting in them playing David Bentley everywhere but on the right side of midfield.

Perhaps Juande Ramos mistook the club’s ambition in competing with archrivals Arsenal. He has taken it a bit too far by trying to compete with Arsene Wenger. Both the gaffers have been fielding players way out of their position so far this season.

What on earth was on Wenger's mind when he let Emmanuel Eboue, a right-sided player by nature, partner lightweight Denilson in the two central midfield positions? Yes, Cesc Fabregas was not available therefore a makeshift midfield was necessary but surely there were other suitable players.

Alexander Helb and Mathieu Flamini have left for, perhaps, greener pastures but what has Wenger done to replace them? He has come out saying his team is strong enough.

The Arsenal board must be the happiest bunch of businessmen in the world. In contrast to every other football club in the known universe, they have a manager who does not want to spend money and in fact makes a healthy profit from the sale of existing players.

We are led to believe that the likes of Carlos Vela and Aaron Ramsey will be the new faces to ignite the team and that Denilson would step up to the mark.

However, Wenger does not seem to have enough faith in Ramsey and instead takes a gamble in playing Eboue out of position. Denilson has struggled to make any sort of impact and Vela didn't even make the bench.

I really don't think managers like Jose Mourinho, Alex Ferguson or Luis Felipe Scolari would have allowed Denilson to play the whole game against Fulham.

While all this has been going on, Chelsea are putting in a new twist to the current EPL transfer market saga. They are looking to seal Robinho’s transfer from Real Madrid. One wonders in which position the Brazilian supremo will play. Could it be at the expense of Joe Cole?

It would be a shame if we have to see Joe Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips, who could be on his way back to Manchester City, benched.

Roman Abrahamovic and his new tool Scolari are bent on turning Chelsea into a star-studded team. Remember the Galacticos at Real Madrid not too long ago? They didn't fare too well as I recall. Hopefully, Chelsea will bring a similar fate upon themselves!

Not to be nasty or anything, but just that buying a winning team overnight is not the way the game was meant to be played.

This weekend's football action is sure to be over-shadowed by the transfer window deadline on Monday, but there are some interesting fixtures that will be played.

The first will be Blackburn Rovers’ visit to Upton Park where West Ham will be looking to bounce back from an embarrassing 3-0 loss to Manchester City. Blackburn too will be looking to be better this week after being held by Hull City. Rovers should nick this but if Dean Ashton plays his game then a draw could be on the cards.

Sunderland will once again be in the spotlight this weekend after overcoming Spurs last week. Up next is a home tie against Manchester City who are also on a high.

In my view, Sunderland has the best strikers outside the top four with the likes of David Healy, Djibril Cisse and El Hadji Diouf . However, in the middle, they are just an average team. If City can hold a strong midfield then the game is theirs to lose.

The match of the week has to be the game at Stamford Bridge between Chelsea and Spurs. Well at least on paper it is! Chelsea will be out to increase their lead over Manchester United — who don’t play this week — to five points. I can’t really see Spurs doing anything to spoil the Blues party.

The transfer window will be closing on Sept 1 as Aug 31 falls on a Sunday. Will there be last-minute moves like the seasons before? Will Arsenal sign a much needed holding (defensive) midfielder? Will Berbatov follow his dream or rot in the reserves?

Whatever the outcome, surely these will be defining moments for the respective clubs involved.

Laws of the game

There are seventeen laws in the official Laws of the Game. The same Laws are
designed to apply to all levels of football, although certain modifications
for groups such as juniors, seniors or women are permitted. The laws are
often framed in broad terms, which allow flexibility in their application
depending on the nature of the game. In addition to the seventeen laws,
numerous IFAB decisions and other directives contribute to the regulation of
football. The Laws of the Game are published by FIFA, but are maintained by
the International Football Association Board, not FIFA itself.

Association football

Association football, more commonly known as football or soccer, is a team
sport played between two teams of eleven players, and is widely considered
to be the most popular sport in the world. It is a football variant played
on a rectangular grass or artificial turf field, with a goal at each of the
short ends. The object of the game is to score by manoeuvring the ball into
the opposing goal. In general play, the goalkeepers are the only players
allowed to use their hands or arms to propel the ball; the rest of the team
usually use their feet to kick the ball into position, occasionally using
their torso or head to intercept a ball in midair. The team that scores the
most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is tied at the end of
the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time and/or
a penalty shootout, depending on the format of the competition.

The modern game was codified in England following the formation of The
Football Association, whose 1863 Laws of the Game created the foundations
for the way the sport is played today. Football is governed internationally
by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (International
Federation of Association Football), commonly known by the acronym FIFA. The
most prestigious international football competition is the FIFA World Cup,
held every four years. This event, the most widely viewed in the world,
boasts an audience twice that of the Summer Olympic Games.

Selangor enggan sia-siakan peluang
<http://groupbolasepak.blogspot.com/2008/08/selangor-enggan-sia-siakan-pelua

"Inilah peluang terakhir kami.

It is a football variant played on a rectangular grass or artificial turf field, with a goal at each of the short ends. The object of the game is to score by manoeuvring the ball into the opposing goal. In general play, the goalkeepers are the only players allowed to use their hands or arms to propel the ball; the rest of the team usually use their feet to kick the ball into position, occasionally using their torso or head to intercept a ball in midair. The team that scores the most goals by the end of the match wins. If the score is tied at the end of the game, either a draw is declared or the game goes into extra time and/or a penalty shootout, depending on the format of the competition.

The modern game was codified in England following the formation of The Football Association, whose 1863 Laws of the Game created the foundations for the way the sport is played today. Football is governed internationally by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (International Federation of Association Football), commonly known by the acronym FIFA. The most prestigious international football competition is the FIFA World Cup, held every four years. This event, the most widely viewed in the world, boasts an audience twice that of the Summer Olympic Games.

Selangor enggan sia-siakan peluang <http://groupbolasepak.blogspot.com/2008/08/selangor-enggan-sia-siakan-peluang.html>

"Inilah peluang terakhir kami.
